Find Waldo in Weslaco!

Hello friends! We hope you and yours are having a wonderful summer! We’ve been awfully busy freshening up the store with new goodies as well as the workshop area in the back. If you haven’t been by the shop or downtown Weslaco, now is the perfect time to visit us! We are hosting a Where’s Waldo-Shop Local Campaign through July 31st.

Waldo is turning 25 this year and to celebrate, the famous fellow in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting 20 local businesses–those who spot him can win prizes, including buttons, books, and more. Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Find Waldo in Weslaco” search list with the names of all the businesses, and collect an “I found Waldo at ____” card for each Waldo they spot.

Collecting cards at 16 or more businesses and turning them in at our shop will win a Waldo button and an entry for other, larger prizes to be drawn at a Waldo party on July 31st. The grand prize is a complete six-volume set of Waldo books. People who prefer a shorter version of the hunt can collect the cards from eight businesses and pick up a Waldo button at The Storybook Garden.

We’ve had many stop in already, so why don’t you and yours join the fun, too? Here are the participating businesses: The Bungalow & Co., Sugar Mama’s Cupcakes, Dance Time, Lionel’s Western Wear, Western Auto, Coco’s Vintage, H & Kay Bakery Supply, Pinateria JOY, The Blue Onion, Arturo’s Bar & Grill, Alonzo Photography, J. Nava Studios, Savory Perks, Wells, The Stronghold Games, Sun Blast Comics, Angie’s Bakery Supplies, and Green Door Day Spa & Salon.

Until next time, have a great weekend! Take care and till then…

A New Season…

One of the wonderful things about living in the Rio Grande Valley is the mild Fall and Winter weather we have. (Winter Texans and other out-of-towners are often amused with how some of us natives bundle up with the slightest cold front. ) Our climate offers a longer growing season-so, while our neighbors to the north are harvesting the last of their crops, we’ve  just begun.

We went this morning to visit our friends’ farm, Sunrise Farm-CSA in Donna. They have such a wonderful thing going. If you aren’t familiar with Community Supported Agriculture, you can read a little more about it here.  If you and your family haven’t had a chance to visit any of the local farmers markets that have sprung up around the Valley lately, you really should give them a try. I am thrilled that there will be a weekly farmers market in Weslaco on Thursday evenings beginning on November 17th.

Have you planted a garden with your family? What are you growing? I wasn’t able to start and maintain a garden last year with the pregnancy and all,  but I hope to give container gardening and square foot gardening a try this year. If you are looking for a book to get your garden started, we have a few suggestions and can order the book you need. We have a few books and items to get your little one excited about growing and eating their vegetables, too!

We have some changes cropping up at our shop. We are in the midst of expanding to make room for more merchandise, classes & workshops, and an area indoor parties.

I know I’ve been quiet lately and haven’t blogged much in quite some time. My family and I  appreciate your continued support of our local and independent children’s bookshop & boutique. We’re celebrating our 10th year and we wouldn’t have made it without you. I hope to see you and yours in the shop soon! Take care and till then…

Food & Fun

These last few days have been great…I’ve been able to rest, spend quality time with my husband, set goals, and get organized.  For one who works a bunch, one day off is great…I’ve been off since Christmas Eve and it has been wonderful!  I was able to attend the Harlingen Farmers Market today…it was pleasant and fun!Farmers Market Purchase We picked up some cute (and good tasting) carrots, mixed greens, spinach, cilantro, and orange blossom honey-my favorite!  This was their 4th event, which takes place each Saturday from 3-5pm. I recommend getting there early…some items go pretty fast.

Tostadas

After our “excursion” we headed back to Weslaco and enjoyed tostadas, fresh squeezed lemonade, and Zumba! Thanks c&m, we had a great time!

We’re 8!

My humble children’s bookshop is celebrating it’s 8th year in business this week. Although our ribbon cutting was in August 2001, our doors were open a month prior to the ceremony.  Anyhow, a BIG THANK YOU  to all my customers who have supported my business all these years.  We hope to continue to serve you, your family, and the community for many more happy days to come!

Celebrate Your Independents!

After numerous calls, meeting & greeting fellow local indie business owners, I finally have a definitive list of all those participating in this coming week’s celebration.  Everyone participating is super excited about this and I am so grateful for all their support.  There is still lots to do so I’ll keep this post brief…

I have set up a website for the Love Your Local initiative for our wonderful community of Weslaco.  Information for the Celebrate Your Independents Week and participating businesses (as well as supporters) will be posted there, too. Find the website here.

One final note, I was out in the “blogosphere” this evening and came across  this post by author April H. Wayland.  I was fortunate to meet April a few years back when she was in the area for a book signing.  Many thanks April, for spreading the word about buying local & supporting indie bookshops.

Love Your Local

indiebound

This is finally coming to fruition! I’m putting together a Love Your Local campaign in Weslaco…one of the first initiatives is a Celebrate Your Independents week which will be taking place July 6th through July 11th.

This is idea is in no way my own creation. There are many great shop local campaigns in place in countless communities throughout the country…as an indie business owner, now more than ever,  I believe we need such a movement for all locally owned independent businesses.

Now that I’m off for the summer, I have a bit more time to put it together.

So far here’s what’s happening…

INDIE BINGO:  During Celebrate Your Independents Week, visit your participating local independent businesses and pick up an Indie Bingo card.  Have each business mark your card. Once you have 5 in a row, hand the card over to a participating store to win a gift basket with offerings from the 24 participating shops.  Winners will be drawn at the Celebrate Your Independents Week Celebration at The Storybook Garden, Sat., July 11th at 10:30am.

THROUGHOUT THE WEEK:  Participating local businesses and organizations are collaborating in creating awesome events all week. Pick up a schedule at participating stores beginning July 1st and make plans to attend!

CELEBRATE YOUR INDEPENDENTS WEEK CELEBRATION:  In the courtyard there will be a Pet Costume Contest prior to the drawing plus, you’ll have a chance to meet & greet participating local merchants. This will take place in the courtyard at the Villa de Cortez (right outside The Storybook Garden) on Sat., July 11th at 10:30am.

I am so passionate about this endeavor and I’d like to thank all those who support my efforts as well as all participating locally owned businesses. For more information, please reach me at 956-968-READ.
